She spent 80 of her 91 yrs washing, drying, & ironing the clothes of well-to-do white folks in her hometown of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. When she finally retired in 1995 she wrote a check for $150,000 to create a scholarship @ the Univ. of Southern Mississippi — a school that would not have accepted her when she was of college age because of the color of her skin.
